Small beautiful afghans
I love this book! The afghans are beautiful and unique. They are all very small, but since they use expensive Debbie Bliss yarns, that is probably just as well for your pocketbook. Substitution should be simple since the yarn weights are mentioned, such as Aran or DK. But for me, I've always found substitions never as easy as they should be.I'm almost done with the beautiful larger size "Flower Garden Throw" on p. 68. Okay, here's what I've run into. This book was first published in 2009, but the lovely "Grass Green Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran" has not been made since 2007, according to the helpful ladies at our local yarn shop, who tried very hard to order this yarn for me.There are no good similar color substitutions at present with Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran. They still make the pale green, lilac, and pink -- at least as of June '11 when I checked the yarn shop's stash, but not the grass green. I had to substitute another yarn for the grass green -- a shade of Mission Falls Merino Aran-weight yarn -- which is also going out of production. And of course we had to calculate the amount of yarn needed, for the larger size afghan, from the yarn substitute. The yarn sizes are slightly different, but because these flower hexagons are a variation of granny-style flowers, it is still beautiful with slightly different yarns. I've loved handling such pretty yarn. But this was a headache. Since it is an afghan based on hexagonal-type squares with a flower in the middle, you could technically make this afghan as large as you wished, until your yarn store runs out of yarn or you're just sick of staring at flower hexagons. The 25 afghans are as follows:Chapter 1 Vintage Style cream comforter pale green textured blanket circular coverlet shetland-style shawl puffs baby blanket argyll afghan gingham blanketChapter 2 American Dream shaker-style throw navajo blanket seminole-style blanket sunshine & shadow throw log cabin coverlet crazy patchwork throwChapter 3 Outside Inside rainblow baby blanket flower garden throw wildflower throw roses & daisies throw seascape wall hanging landscape play blanketChapter 4 Around the World tartan blanket african beads circular throw scandinavian sampler throw aran-style throw kelim carpet runner indigo ikat throwThese are lovely blankets, but it will take some work to come up with colors or color/yarn substitutions, so I'm recommending this book for somewhat more experienced crocheters. You'll definitely want to make friends with the folks at your local yarn shop for these patterns.

interesting ideas
I love grannies and small pieces I can carry around and this book fulfills that need. While the yarn used is mainly Debbie Bliss, they are also all labeled as to being aran or dk weight so substitution is not a problem. The author's color sense is great. Just take a look at the front cover. Some of the afghans are very small even for a baby but I see no problem in making them larger. There are many here that I like, but my favorites would be the granny on the cover, shetland style shawl, shaker style throw also made in squares, rainbow baby blanket which is a great way to use leftovers, and roses and daisies throw which is very colorful. Author presents afghans which are different from the Leisure Arts patterns (which I also like) but I enjoy seeing the UK slant. Certainly welcome addition.

INTERESTING AND ORIGINAL DESIGNS
Very interesting and original designs, a real wide variety. But....some of them were too hard for me, and I've been crocheting for 35 years. Maybe that's just me.

awesome
There is nothing quite like opening a new book especially one that holds so many different lessons. After learning from the dvd format I am now comfortable trying it all. I love this, it covers so many different techniques and they are all relatively easy to follow. The road to discovery is wide open to anyone who is inclined to learn this craft.

Pretty baby blankets
I was really disappointed. These are all quite small, with little if any instruction on how to make them bigger. No chain multiples given, etc. Had I realized every pattern in this book is so very small, I'd not have ordered the book.

Wonderful book
The first thing I would like to say to the critics is why on earth would you buy a book with art yarn show all over the front and back covers if you are not interested in Art Yarn? To those of us who love the stuff this book is a treasure. As well as showing in great detail the how too of making all of the yarns we drool over there is so much more. Yes she does show you how to make a wheel form PVC pipe as here in the U.S. They are popular and one company Babe Spinning Wheels makes nothing else but PVC pipe wheels plus PVC electric spinners. As for Aran Spinning mentioned in Spin Crazy.'s review, over here, Aran spinning is merely a way of describing a type of yarn between worsted and chunky and just like saying fingering spinning. The dyeing section is terrific as is the fiber section and the detail and photography of the spinning section is second to none. Although I will never build a spindle or a wheel I did learn a few useful things from reading what goes into the process. Would this be a good buy for someone not interested in art yarn, maybe not but if you love and ever want to make art yarn, on any kind of non electric spindle or wheel, this is the one for you. l plan to give my daughter who lives in England a copy of this book and a kick spindle for Christmas because art yarn is her next project.

Great Patterns
These unique afghans are not for the faint-hearted as they require a lot of repetitive work. That is positive as it is the perfect craft to do while watching a movie. Not only are the patterns great and clearly written, the suggested colours are very useful. I completed the wall hanging for a friend's cottage and it turned out really well and I added some of my own touches. i
