Q: Will this accept bare wire in addition to banana cable?

Yes they will. I'm not sure of the largest guage they will accept. Look at one of the pictures (The third?) and you can see the hole in the back and how the piece that accepts the banana plug will screw down to clamp the wire.

Q: Any idea if these will work on a Pioneer SX-1980?

No. The SX 1980 has spring clip speaker terminals and you should only use bare wire on those. These banana to spade clips work great for receivers that have a threaded post or screw type speaker terminal.

Q: What is the return policy if they don"t fit correctly?

Tell Amazon you need to return. Return. Get refund.

Q: Will these work with car anplifiers or just home audio since the terminals are much smaller (3/8”)?

You are right. At least at my speaker terminals these were way too small. Could be exactly the same with car terminals.
