Q: How is this able to be unlocked from outside the house?

This is a great chain lock. Before you leave the house, make sure the entire chain is on the sliding part. Not locked into the key part. Just leave the chain hanging down on the sliding thing. When you are outside the door, you will only be able to leave the door open about 3 inches. Put your hand inside the door, grab the hanging chain, and insert the other end into the key lock part. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE KEY WITH YOU. You will hear a click when that part is in the key lock. When you get back home, take the key and insert it on the top of the key lock. Turn the key and the chain will fall out. It is a little hard to explain, but I hope this helps you.

Q: Can I buy 3 locks which use the same key?

I bought two of these and both sets of keys open each lock. Not terribly secure but oh well.

Q: Can we purchase multiples of these that are keyed the same?

No...random. You might get lucky. I have two. Great deal adequate protection for the price.
