Q: Does this unit come with a test tone cd?

Yes. With 3 different dB settings for different frequencies. Works very well when setting maximum output of a radio and or amp. Use it nearly daily.

Q: Can you connect an rca cable to this tool to test the output of preamps or an lc6i?

YES you can plug this into anything. The input is RCA connector. That's what it is for. It will indicate 1% distortion (wave distortion or clipping). Lc6i puts out out up to 9.5v, So you are not going to be running it even close to its limit unless your amps are 10v in capable (even then, you should keep everything around 5v max). Set the gain to find the red light level, then switch to a multimeter on AC mode to see where your voltage is.

Q: will this help me to find the source of harshness and shrill treble in my car stereo provided it is caused by distortion ?

The volume on a sound system can only go so high without distorting the music it is playing. This device is used to determine the highest volume level that can a system can be played without distorting the sound so the user knows not to turn the volume any higher than that. If your system has shrill treble, use the tone adjustments to lower the treble level until it doesn't sound so harsh.

No! You just need to adjust your volume to about 3/4 it doesn’t have to be spot on! You just don’t want the volume too low or all the way up as to prevent distortion and allow the dd1 to work as designed!
