Excellent resource for learning about MI and its potential uses within correctional settings
This is a great primer for anyone unfamiliar with MI and for those familiar but interested in its use within corrections. The authors present the topic with correctional staff as their main audience, and make a solid evidence based argument for the use of MI with reentry individuals. I personally used this book for a research project on MI in social work on the topic of reentry and corrections. It was very informative, easy to read, evidence based, and provided wonderful considerations to bear in mind as a professional in various disciplines working with incarcerated or recently released individuals. The text provides a thorough explanation of MI, its intent, examples of use, and speaks to specifically to rehabilitaion with a client focus that is a refreshing change in criminal justice treatment modalities. An excellent text.

Loved it!
This was a great book! It reviewed MI in detail and applied it to settings for professionals working with offenders. As a new psychology professional in the corrections setting I found it to be very helpful.

Interesting and useful
This book is at the professional level but could be used by anyone. As a case manager and teacher in a correctional environment (adult male prison) I found a lot of helpful interesting information that could be used in job and sometimes my social situations.

A must read if you work/care about someone who has been incarcerated and want to support them in changing behavior.
I am a caseworker with more than 50 parolees on caseload. I have read other MI books but this book has been the best because it shows you how to use MI with parolees, uses scenarios that come up with this population and gives examples of what to say to work collaborative with client instead of for client. Conversations are with purpose and with sometimes having only 5 minutes to speak to a parolee I want to make sure what I say is worth parolees time. I recommend this book to anyone working with incarcerated or supervised population.

Loved that this book was from a criminal justice standpoint
I work in field of probation and MI is being encouraged. Loved that this book was from a criminal justice standpoint. Have recommended book to many co-workers.

Disappointed. Wish it was better.
The book is okay nothing grand. I work with sexual offenders and it basically talks about using a client centered approach which I do. But it wasn’t helpful at making me a better therapist. Disappointed. Hardly any activities in it. Maybe one if that and hardly had questions to ask offenders. The best book for working with sexual offenders is a workbook called “the road to freedom”. Even if you just do forensic counseling with offenders it’s not that helpful. Maybe it will be for you because it does explain what motivational interviewing is.
